The course takes you primarily through neighborhoods before leading you down to the park. There was a water station set up around the half-way point (even though it was on the opposite side of the road) and a few residents were out cheering along the way. After rocking the hills, it was great to have most of the last .2 miles or so be downhill to the finish.
While I love large races, it is fun to run small local races as well. To kick off Memorial Day weekend last year, I joined several friends at the Holly Springs Memorial Day 5K. It was a good little race - a hilly course, but regardless I was still ready to run it again in 2016. We arrived pretty early and met up with friends in the pre-race area. Bib pickup was well organized, there was music pumping, and energy was great. Even though it is definetly a smaller race, the atmosphere was still great. Best of all, the lack of port-o-potties at the start from last year was resolved! The race started promptly and we were on our way! The first portion of the course was a nice downhill. Of course, I went out way too fast even though I told myself that I wouldn't do that. I knew that the downhill wasn't going to last long and that we would soon be hitting some rolling hills for the next 3 miles. While the hills were not "too bad" by Atlanta standards, they were enough to challenge you a bit. After crossing the finish line, we each gathered in the final stretch of the course and cheered on the rest of our friends and each of the other runners coming in. Seriously, there is nothing better than coming towards the finish line and having people cheering. The cowbells and cheers continued until the last finisher came through the chute... We had two bling winners today including a 2nd place age group for Nicole and 1st place age group for her husband, Chuck! Wahooo! It is always awesome to be there for your friends when they win some bling! Huge congrats to both of them! After the awards ceremony, the kid's fun run took place which is a 1K run made up of two loops of the path inside of the park. We snapped a few pictures and headed to breakfast to refuel. I am so happy that I decided to make the Holly Springs Memorial Day 5K a part of my holiday weekend tradition. Hopefully this race continues to grow in support over the upcoming years because it truly is a great local race.
