No matter if you are running a Turkey Trot, enjoying a day with family and friends, spending the day in the kitchen getting ready for a family fest, watching football, or however you chose to spend the day, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Remember to be thankful for everything that you have in your life - the little things that you take for granted might be something that others only dream of. I will be taking the next few days off from blogging in order to enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend with my family and friends. I will return next weekend though with race recaps and other fun things to help you kick off the holiday season! Wishing you and your family and friends a very happy Thanksgiving! Question of the Day: Are you running a turkey trot today? Which one?
I always talk about how so many race weekends are about the people and the memories made. Well, Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas was no different. The awesome crew at #WeRunSocial hosted a meet up on Monday morning that gave me an opportunity to spend time with all of those awesome friends from the 'interwebs'! I was beyond excited to head to the meet-up! There were friends that I have seen a few times this year at other races, but there were some that I was going to meet for the first time and even meet some new people as well. The meet-up started off in front of the iconic fountains at Bellagio. While we waited for the group to arrive, I had to take the opportunity to get a jumping picture in front of the Bellagio with my medals! As everyone arrived, it seriously looked like a high school reunion happening. We all hugged, squealed, and of course selfied it up. There were a lot of epic stories from the night before at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon & Half Marathon and the crazy wind storm that we all conquered. A huge shout out to some of our 'crazies' who actually ran two races in a day! A number of our crew members ran what was called #SD2LV where they ran the Silver Strand Half Marathon in San Diego then hoped onto a flight to Las Vegas. We also had some members go from Avengers Half Marathon weekend in Disneyland (running any form of combination of 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon over 3 days) then flying from the finish line to Las Vegas for even more miles of fun! Regardless of how you rocked your miles over the weekend and even those who cheered us on, everyone was ready to celebrate! Sadly, due to the wind, the fountain show was canceled at the Bellagio that morning. It is ok though, if there is one thing that we know how to do, it is to have fun! After hanging out by the fountain area for a while, we shifted over towards an outdoor seating area with some heaters to try to keep warm (especially our southern California friends). Some might find what happened next as being rude, but Momma K captured the true essence of what happens when you put together a group of 50+ social media "pro" & bloggers together. Of course we were posting live (and recharging our phones), because if it isn't on the internet it didn't really happen! A special thanks to Brian (www.pavementrunner.com) who made sure that we all had the latest and greatest #WeRunSocial gear as well as special edition Las Vegas swag! I know some of you have already spotted the #WeRunSocial version of the PRO Compression BOOM! socks on social media. Don't worry, you can still get a pair on your feet - click here to buy them (pssst - code WRS will save you 40% on these bad boys). After saying our 'see you soons' (I don't like goodbyes), Momma K and I headed back to meet up with Papa J for a bite to eat and some more touring around Las Vegas. We had some good eats, shared many great laughs, and made memories together. So it wouldn't be Las Vegas without doing something toursity, right? During our last trip to Las Vegas in 2012, The Linq was just getting started with its construction. When we decided that we were heading back to Las Vegas this year, we knew that checking out The Linq and riding the High Roller observation wheel was the one thing that we needed to do! While some people might get apprehensive about the thought of going 550 feet above the Las Vegas Strip, it was a total must do for us! To sweeten up the deal, we each saved $10 off our admission with our Rock 'n' Roll Runner Perks bands. The High Roller isn't like a regular ferris wheel. You ride in a pod which holds probably 20 people, but we scored our own pod. Each pod has some bench seating or you can wander around the pod at your leisure. There are also VIP pods that you have an open bar and you can even get married at 550 feet. The journey around the High Roller takes about 30 minutes and offers some of the best views of Las Vegas. I highly recommend adding this to your next trip (if you aren't afraid of heights). Momma K and I both agreed that riding at night is probably the way to go for sure. The price is $10 more after 5:00pm, but I think the $10 extra is worth it to see the strip lit up. After making our way around town for a bit, it was time to go back to the room to get ready to head back to Atlanta. There is just something about seeing all the lights of the city that makes me smile. Seriously, every trip we have ever made to Las Vegas I end up with tons of pictures of the strip and the hotels at night on my phone. It just makes me happy. Sigh. After 4 absolutely amazing days in Las Vegas, it was time to head home. First, we had to stop by the welcome sign so I could get a few signature pictures before spending the rest of the day traveling back home. Like they say, all good things must come to an end. Thank you again to everyone who made this weekend so special and memorable! Until next time, Las Vegas (hopefully 2016)!

#win100headbands #nopieceofblackelasticintheback #tistheseason Get a snack ready folks, this is going to be a long one! To be honest, night races can be a little tricky. What do you do all day? What do you eat/drink? When do you eat/drink? As someone who mainly runs (and runs better) in the morning, I struggle preparing for evening races for sure! Throw in the temptation of all the fun of Las Vegas....whoa! Despite how much fun there is to have in Las Vegas, I kept focused on my plan to take it easy during the day. However, I didn't want to lay around the hotel all day. Momma K and I went adventuring down towards Caesar's Palace and The Venetian in the morning to do some sightseeing, shopping, etc. As we made our way around The Venetian, we conveniently (and "accidentally") came across Carlos' Bakery. If you have ever seen the show Cake Boss or been to New York City, you are probably familiar with this bakery. Since the line was short, it would be rude to not stop for a snack, so of course we had to be polite and get a tasty treat. With so many yummy options staring me in the face, I finally decided that a chocolate mouse cream puff was going to be my selection. We got our pastries to go and sat in a pleasant little garden area for a rest. See...I am fueling and resting (at least that is what I was telling myself). After enjoying our snack and people watching in one of the finest places on earth, we headed back to our hotel to get some true rest and get ready to run the Las Vegas Strip! LET'S ROCK! It is time to get ready to run the Las Vegas Strip! Seriously, I have been dreaming of running the race for several years now and tonight it is my turn to run it! Is this really happening? Is it going to be everything I wanted it to be? AHHHHH! Freak out mode officially started (but all positive)! As we exited Mandalay Bay to head over to the pre-race area at the MGM Resorts Village, we saw a shut down Las Vegas Blvd! I think this is when things really sank in what we were about to do. Of course you can't have free reign of The Strip and not take a picture! If you can't tell, I was just a little bit excited! After heading through security, we proceeded to the pre-race area which featured a concert by Kid Rock. While a lot of the crowd was rockin' out, we found a nice spot off to the side where we could sit, relax, eat our pre-race 'meal', and still hear the concert. While it would have been fun to have gotten up closer to the stage, I knew that it was probably best to rest my legs a bit before heading to the corral. We knew going into the evening that as the night went on, the winds were expected to kick-up a bit with dropping temperatures and a chance of some rain. Fortunately, we had packed some heat sheets with us to help us keep warm before the race. After chilling out a little bit and eating our "dinner" we started to get ready to head to the corral, but first, port-o-potties! Rock 'n' Roll for the win yet again in terms of restrooms! There were an abundance of port-o-potties available. The lines were super minimal and moved so quickly - thank you! As we left the port-o-potty area to take the short walk over to the corrals, we really felt the wind pick up! There were even little "dust storms" forming in the lot with the port-o-potties. Yea, if this was just the start of the winds coming in, we knew that this could end up getting interesting. We made our way into our corral about 25 minutes before we were due to start (as Rock 'n' Roll suggests) which was perfect. Nothing is worse than waiting for long periods of time in a corral, so thank you Rock 'n' Roll for encouraging runners to head to the corral according to their corral start time. As we stood in the corral, we met a lot of other runners from all over the country and even some international runners. One of my favorite things about race day is meeting new runners and hearing their stories. Chatting it up with other runners definitely made time go by faster. Just before it was our turn to start, the rain started to move in. Momma K and I knew that we had two choices: be miserable, cold, and wet runners or embrace the awesome opportunity to run the Last Vegas Strip and have a blast. Ummmmm, we will take the later option please! So away we go! Most of the first mile takes you south from in front of Mandalay Bay towards the airport. About a half of a mile in, you pass one of the most iconic pieces of Las Vegas - the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. Duh, we had to stop! Tonight's race wasn't about time, it was about having a great time and making awesome memories together. As we turned around to head north on Las Vegas Blvd towards "The Strip" it really hit us with how truly awesome this was. All the neon of Las Vegas lit the way for thousands upon thousands of runners. It rained until we were just pass the mile 2 marker, but that was definitely not ruining our time! Race specators are great, but the ones lining parts of Las Vegas Blvd (even those oblivious as to what was going on), were awesome! The cheers coming along the street as we made our way north towards the center of The Strip were much appreciated and amazing! Around mile 5 was what we deemed our 'favorite hydration station' - while we didn't stop there, it was still a great selfie opp. I knew around mile 6 that mom was probably going to need a bathroom stop at some point soon (we usually stop around mile 8-9ish for a bathroom stop). The port-o-potty lines on course were long and neither of us were really keen on waiting in those lines. Well, I soon spotted something ahead - CARL'S JR! We hopped off course for 20 yards and popped on into good ol' Carl's Jr and used their restroom with no wait! Shout out to the awesome staff there that were so nice and saved the day for us! Running in Vegas wouldn't be complete without a quick selfie at some of the gloriously tacky wedding chapels along Las Vegas Blvd! All the things that make Las Vegas great all rolled up into fantastic venues to wed! Yes, please! Brandi and Momma K's 13.1 Las Vegas tour of selfies and mayhem continued. Have you ever watched the show Pawn Stars? Well, you pass the pawn shop from the show, Gold & Silver Pawn, around mile 8. Do you think we had to take a moment for some pictures here? Duh. Even better, we decided that it was appropriate to head into the store for a quick browse around before continuing north. There was a slight portion of the course that was "meh" around mile 9 where you ran on some side streets, however thanks to Toyota and their awesome cheer zone they really brought some energy to the course! We then made our way over to the end of Fremont Street before heading back south down Las Vegas Blvd for the last 3 miles towards the finish line. The last 3 miles or so got ugly! The winds really started to pick up - BAD! Seriously. The wind gusts were hitting about 65+ mph at this point. The cones that separated the marathon and half marathon lanes were blowing over and runners were even drifting. There was one gust that picked us up off of our feet even. Yea, I don't care how bad I would need to go to the bathroom, you could not pay me to go into a port-o-potty at this point - haha! Ok, so, you know I always keep it real with you. With that said, I present to you, selfies of the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon 2015 wind storm. I hope that my wind-blown look adds a bit of joy to your day. We checked off the northern hotels & casinos one by one as we conquered the final miles. I won't lie, that wind was beyond brutal, it was tough those final miles, but we sucked it up and laughed it off. We did it! We beat rocked 13.1 miles, took some epic selfies, and beat the wind storm! Life is what you make out of it. We could have been miserable for 13.1 miles, but we vowed to have fun regardless of the weather and that we did! I would not have had this any other way. Every race is special, however running with someone by your side to share the moments is even more special. We earned this bling! So for those of you that thought I was overreacting with the wind situation (as if the selfies weren't enough), as we made our way through the runner secure zone (finisher chute), there were palm fronds on the ground that had fallen off the trees lining the road. After gathering our post race snacks and beverages, we made our way to gear check (transported via UPS trucks from the start to the finish) and to claim our Remix Challenge medals. Oh, I failed to mention something pretty big! This wasn't just any race for Momma K - this was her 3rd half marathon in 90 days and 2nd half marathon in 15 days which qualified her for Half Fanatics! Whoooot! When I think back to a few years ago when mom said that she would 'try to run a 5K a month' with me, I couldn't be more proud to welcome her to my world of insanity of ALL THE RACES! Thank you to everyone who made my first Rock 'n' Roll weekend such an amazing one! From the Rock 'n' Roll event staff, to the awesome volunteers, to fellow runners, and my friends sending virtual cheers all weekend, it was a memorable weekend to say the least. I have been asked a number of times already if I plan on returning to Las Vegas for a future Rock 'n' Roll weekend - ummmm, of course! I have my laces crossed tight that my 2016 schedule will allow for me to head back west again next November to run The Strip yet again! Hopefully next time mother nature will not act like a fool and try to make us look like a bunch of drunk runners heading down Las Vegas Blvd! In all seriousness, if there is one thing that I want you to take away from this recap it is that not every race will be perfect - the weather won't always be ideal, you might not always run your best, or something else might not be perfect. You have been given the opportunity to run whatever race that it is that you are running, embrace those miles and moments. It is easy to get frustrated on course, just take a moment and breathe and enjoy the moment. Remember, it is your life and your story to write....enjoy it!
When I first registered for the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas 1/2 Marathon, I knew right away that I wanted to add the 5K to my race weekend as well. The 5K is held on Saturday evening while the marathon, half marathon, and 10K are on Sunday. When shorter distances are offered the day before, I always like to run them as a nice shakeout/fun run for the weekend. Oh yea, you also get extra bling for running the 5K in conjunction with any of the races on Sunday. SOLD! The 5K took place at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds which was very easy to get to via the Monorail. We just took the Monorail all the way to the northernmost station (SLS Hotel & Casino) and after a short walk through the hotel and across the street we were there! On our way over to the Las Vegas Festival Grounds, I ran into my friend (and fellow INKnBURN Ambassador), Sue. It is always so great to run into friends that you have never met in person! As we crossed over Las Vegas Blvd to the race site, the energy was jumpin'! The music was going and light up batons were being handed out to the crowd as we entered. Huge thanks to Rock 'n' Roll for taking care of their runners! A lot of 5Ks do not provide gear check for runners, however Rock 'n' Roll made sure that this service was provided. At first I didn't really think that I would want to put anything in gear check, but I was so happy that I did! Once I finished, I got a little chilly between the sweat and the cooler temperature coming in after the sun went down. As we were hanging out in the race area waiting for the race to start, I was looking around for port-o-potties and didn't see any. Say what?!?! I asked one of the awesome volunteers where I could find restrooms and they pointed me to two buildings (one on either side of the grounds). Indoor facilities?!?! Yes please! Wait for it....so I go in and pass the sinks and turn to see THIS! BATHROOMS FOR DAYS! Yes, there were so many stalls that waiting to use the restroom was little to no wait this evening! Seriously, let the runner chorus begin singing! It was quite entertaining to listen to all of the reactions as ladies entered the restrooms. It was soon time to line up in our corrals. There were 20 corrals for the 5K and about 8,000 runners total. The corrals went off every minute to two minutes to help make sure that things were spaced out nicely. The vibe in the corrals was awesome! Between the light up batons, music, and our announcers, you couldn't help but be pumped and ready to run! While the first digits of your bib corresponded with your corral, a lot of people still got into any corral that they pleased. This is a little frustrating because it is dangerous for all runners. The corrals are assigned to your projected race pace that you provided in order to make sure that everyone starting in the corral runs approximately the same pace - it is a safety thing. While there were some folks that were not starting in the correct corral, things were never too congested. I think that the fact that each corral had about 300-400 people in them really helped out. The first 1/3 of a mile or so was within the paved section of the Las Vegas Festival Grounds. After that, you made a left hand turn out onto Sammy Davis Jr Drive and down about a mile until you turned around to head back towards the finish. Most of the final mile was held within the Las Vegas Festival Grounds which was dazzled up with dazzling lights, blow-up displays, and awesome music. The weather was great and the course was great! I ran my fastest mile ever and just missed a 5K PR but I am totally ok with that. I had a blast running dressed like Elvis with my rhinestone microphone in tow and I wouldn't trade that for anything. After crossing the finish line, runners made their way through a runners only secure zone where you received your finisher medal, got your picture taken, and of course received some snacks! Upon exiting the secure zone to wait for Momma K and Papa J at gear check, the Rock 'n' Roll crew came up and interviewed me. Here is how my 5 seconds of fame went... Credit: Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series The Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas 5K post race entertainment featured Matt & Kim. We had dining reservations this evening, so we were not able to stick around very long to enjoy the post-race concert, but the little bit we did get to hear was great. They really worked the crowd and made sure everyone was having a great time! If the 5K was any indication on how the half marathon was going to be tomorrow - WOW! While you don't run on the Las Vegas Strip during the 5K, there is plenty of other awesomeness that made up for that. Thank you Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas for a great first race of the weekend! I am so glad that I added the 5K to my Rock 'n' Roll weekend! Question of the Day: Have you taken part in a race weekend challenge (such as the Remix Challenge)? What did you think about running a race the day before another race?
I feel like I waited so long for this weekend! For a few years now, I have been eyeing the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas weekend. Going into my first Rock 'n' Roll race weekend, I was beyond pumped about so many different things. A lot of my blogger and social media pals have ran a lot of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series this year and I have been following along in their fun - all while being totally jealous! Our epic race weekend started bright and early on Friday morning! With a quick layover in Dallas, TX we were finally on our was to Las Vegas! I was totally thankful on the flight that we had bulkhead seats that allowed me extra leg room as well as prime viewing of the Hoover Dam as we were descending into Las Vegas. We finally arrived in Las Vegas! Wooooot! Seriously, our luggage seemed like it was going to take FOREVER to get off of the plane, but doesn't that always seem to happen when you have somewhere that you really want to be!?! After getting our luggage and rental car, we headed to our hotel to check-in and grab a quick bite to eat. Remember, one of my cardinal rules of "expo-ing" is never go hungry - you don't need to have a melt down! The Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas expo was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center which is conveniently located right off of the monorail system. A quick little ride and we were there! From the moment that you approached the expo, you could feel awesome energy all around you! We went to the expo on Friday which was day 2 (of 3) of the expo. It was a lighter crowd, but the atmosphere was still pumpin'! As you entered the official expo area, Rock 'n' Roll made sure to remind you that "You're Kind of a Big Deal." Yea, we are. Did you know that the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon & 1/2 Marathon is one of only two times during the year that the Las Vegas Strip gets shut down!?! The other time is on New Year's Eve. So, yea, we are a big deal! The first area that you are funneled into is the bib pickup area. The area was very well organized with areas for marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K packet pickup all sorted by bib number (which was in your final instruction email). As I mentioned earlier, it was a very light crowd, so we got our bibs quite quickly. It didn't take too long for me to find someone I knew at the expo. I ran into my friends Jarian and Troy from back home. After receiving your race bib(s), your next stop was a section to pick up your race shirt. This was also super organized in my opinion and moved pretty quickly. They were only allowing for size exchanges on the marathon/half marathon shirts at the expo - all 10K and 5K shirt exchanges had to be done at the race. Your next stop was entering into the shopping/vendor portion of the expo. The first part was dedicated to official race merchandise. With Brooks being a sponsor, there was some pretty awesome gear to choose from! Whether you were wanting a tank, short sleeve, long sleeve, jacket, hat, pint glass, they had you covered! A lot of time race merchandise areas end up looking like a bargain basement sale, with stuff just thrown everywhere. The official merchandise area was very spacious and organized (by style, gender, race distance, etc) - I am sure this changed later on in the expo though. Ok, total running nerd alert! While reading other blogger recaps of Rock 'n' Roll races this year, I have always been envious of the port-o-potty fitting rooms that are set up. Needless to say, I was pretty stoked to get to check this out myself! It was definitely the cleanest "port-o" that I have ever been in. Haha! Next, runners flocked to #RunHappyIsland which was an area of pure running happiness! Gait analysis to games to giveaways, there was so much awesome going on! I finally scored a #RunHappyIsland shirt that I have been envying on others! Score! My dear friend Jarian is quite the fun one. When he saw there was a chance to ride the mechanical Brooks shoe, he was all over it! A lot of people were getting knocked off the shoe withing 30 seconds...here is how Jarian did! After having some laughs at #RunHappyIsland we proceeded to the rest of the expo area which featured about 80+ vendors of various products, services, and races. I think one of Momma K's favorite booths was the Geico booth where she won the slot machine game that won her a water bottle, shirt, and a complimentary massage after Sunday's race! Boom! We made our way around the expo checking out what was all there. Expos are an awesome way to pickup items that you already use at great expo prices, sign up for future races, and even check out new products. Of course we had to stop by and visit our favorite ladies at Sparkle Athletic and Sparkly Soul - they are always a joy to chat with. We also picked up some goodies from PRO Compression and a few other vendors along the way. Bibs acquired. Shopping done. Hanging out with friends. I call this a successful expo! Day 2 of Expo FunAfter spending 2 hours at the expo already, you would think that we were done. Nope. We had to go back for more on Saturday! We knew that today was going to be a lot more crowded since a lot of participants came into town after work on Friday or early Saturday morning. So what possibly could have taken us to the expo for a 2nd day? Well, remember this guy?!?! That's right, 2014 Boston Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi was at the expo. Meb was going to be at the expo for a meet & greet as well as pacing the 5K on Saturday and leading the 1:45 half marathon pace group on Sunday. I couldn't miss the opportunity to meet Meb, so back to the expo we went! We waited about 40 minutes to get to meet Meb, but the line went by so fast as you chatted with other runners around you. Meb was such a pleasure to meet. He is very soft spoken, yet his words are so powerful. It was such a wonderful honor to meet him, hug him, and of course selfie with him. I made another quick stop by the Sparkly Soul booth where I had the opportunity to meet one of my fellow Sparkly Soul Ambassadors, Lisa, who was working the booth. Let me tell you, Lisa is AMAZING! It was such a pleasure to get to meet her in person - I just wish I head more time to speak with her. We made one final stop which was the KT Tape booth. The line to get taped is always long (but worth it), however I was lucky enough to have won a Fast Pass to skip the line. Hint: if you are heading to a race expo, be sure to watch the KT Tape social media pages for opportunities to win a Fast Pass a few days before the expo. I must say, the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas expo exceeded my expectations. It was a great experience all around from the atmosphere, to the organization, to the selection of vendors, everything was great! After leaving the expo, I was more excited than ever to run the 5K and Half Marathon this weekend!
What a weekend it has been so far! I can't wait to share the events from the past few days with everyone! If you follow me on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook you have an glimpse into the fun! Before you start thinking awkward thoughts, it is Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon night! I have been looking forward to this night for several years now, and I cannot believe that it is here! Once again, I couldn't decide what I wanted to wear for this race. For a while I had planned on attempting to PR at this race, however after looking at my wicked crazy race schedule the weeks leading up to it I knew my body just shouldn't be pushed like that for this weekend. I decided that I wanted to run this side-by-side with Momma K. This will be her 6th half marathon (2nd in just 15 days) which will qualify her for Half Fanatics upon completion. Once we decided that we were running together, we knew we wanted either matching or coordinating outfits. Well, our friends at Sparkle Athletic recently released the PERFECT skirt for the occasion which was the foundation for our outfits.... If you happen to see us this evening, be sure to send cheers or snap a selfie with us! Please be sure to follow along in the fun! Which one? If not, which location would you want to run?
Tonight I will be running the first part of my Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Remix Challenge (5K on Saturday night and Half Marathon on Sunday). Y'all know that I cannot attend such an event without something fabulous to wear! Here we go..... I was very indecisive on what exactly I wanted to do for tonight's outfit. After going through a lot of ideas (some that would have required much more time than I could have devoted to creative something, Elvis was the winner! The top of my outfit started as what I referred to as a "sexy Elvis" costume which I purchased an hacked up to suit my running needs. It was originally a long sleeved jumpsuit which I absolutely refused to wear due to how insanely hot it would have been! The sleeves and pants portion were removed and hemmed. I then decided to "dazzle" it up a bit - I mean, this is VEGAS!?!?! I added some sequins to the outfit, painted a sports bra with metallic paint, and created a super sparkly microphone to go with it. Trust me, this is exactly the way that Elvis would have wanted me to run tonight! If you see me tonight, be sure to say hello and of course snap a selfie! Please be sure to follow along in the fun!
